History of Scissett F.C.
Junior Section.
The Huddersfield & District Junior Football League was inaugurated in 1973 with limited age groups and celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 1998, having expanded their operation many fold to include players aged 6 years to 18 years. Scissett F.C. did not enter a junior team until 1985 with one team and grew by one team per year over the next 5 years. People involved at that time were Mick Parkes, Terry Firth, Bruce Croucher and Fred Moseley.
The next few years saw a decline in teams until by 1993/4 season there was only one team of U12’s, run by David Hales, who had run this team from U10’s and who had also to undertake the role of Junior Secretary.
Allen Dawson entered the scene 1994/5 season with an U12’s and along with David Hales U13’s and Steve Cosgrove’s U10’s the Junior section then had 3 teams. The following season saw a new U12’s, run by Mr. Stiff and Mr. Barton, the retirement of David Hales as Junior Secretary with Allen Dawson taking over the role.
It became imperative to ensure that S.F.C. recruited a new U10’s team every year from that point on. In previous years we had lost good footballers from our area to other teams, due to not having a team of their age at Scissett. This was achieved until the advent of Mini-Soccer in 1998 with the help of Phil. Chambers and Phil. Wright (1996) and Shaun Tinsley and Darren Eastwood (1997). From ALL of these afore mentioned S.F.C. Junior teams there are lads that now playing in the 3 teams of the Senior Section and other local teams in the area.
Then along came Mini-Soccer. In the early days it was slow to start with only one team at U9’s and U10’s, though the 10’s came top of their division. This number of sides remained fairly static with the only exception the introduction of a U8 team under Darren Day in September 2001.
Allen Dawson retired as Junior Secretary in 2003, with Ray Higgins taking over the role.
Recent years have seen an explosion in Junior football, with the club now running 16 Junior teams, covering ages 6 to 16, and also incorporating girl’s teams.
2004/2005 season saw junior player registration increase by 50%, to over 215 boys & girls. This Season was a milestone for the Junior Section in a number of ways.
- The Junior section introduced 3 sides at U8 & U10 for the first time,
- Girls joined the ranks on a team basis, with U11 & U14 teams entering into the West Riding Girls League under Managers Sarah Kimmings & Mick Parry accordingly.
- The Club signed a sporting agreement with Scissett Middle School to further strengthen our ties with the local community
- The Club achieved it’s ambition to move to Club Colours across the complete range of all 16 Junior & 3 Senior teams, thanks in part to a dramatically re-vamped fund raising section
- The first ever Scissett Mini Soccer Tournament was run for Teams of U8 & U9, which attracted 32 teams from all over West Yorkshire, raising the profile of the club
The latest stage in the Club’s history was possibly one of it’s proudest, when in January 2005 the Junior Section obtained the much sought after Charter Club Standard from the F.A.
The season 2004/2005 finished well with the U14 Girls winning the WRGLA - Cup , 3-0 over Farsley Celtic . The U8's winning the Honley Tournament , and the U11's finishing runners up in the Otley Tournament ,as well as gaining promotion to Division 2 of the league. The U10's under Craig Cousen won both the A & B tournament at Dalton in the August.
Our Second mini soccer tournament was a even bigger success with the numbers of entries growing to 52 teams .It was also pleasing to have two U11 teams entered in the league for the 2005/2006 season , and also a U17 Team both were first's for Scissett .This season also saw for the first time 3 teams being registered at U9's , and the first ever U7 team under Andy McLauchlan.
Not to be outdone the Girls section entered U11 & U12 teams ,and to support the growth in girls football , a club co-ordinator for this section was appointed Mick Quinn, with Rachel Bromby joining the Girls Team Managers set up.
The Club also welcomed the appointment our our First Female coach , in Jessica Waites working with the Girls teams.
As Junior's numbers reached another high in terms of players registered, the club took the decision to set up a Junior Commitee to deal with the day to day running of this section . This enabled the Junior section to co-ordinate a number key roles within the section , and appoint a number of new positions . Including Justin Beever as Registration Secretary , and a dedicated person for club services including Kit, Club shop , Website & Media, in Jane Higgins. To ensure we maintain our Charter Standard the club also appointed Faye Scott as Club child protection officer.
This year saw the opening of the Scissett Snax Shack at the Middle School , providing a permanent home for our dedicated Fund raisers , and much needed tea's /coffee's and hot snacks on match days.
